Discord GIF Sizes

Custom Emoji (128×128px, under 256KB)

Discord custom emoji have strict limits. Your GIF must be:

  • 128×128 pixels (square format required)
  • Under 256KB file size

If your GIF is larger, you need to both resize it and compress it.

Steps for Discord emoji:

  1. Resize to 128×128px using GIF Resizer
  2. If over 256KB, compress using GIF Compressor
  3. Go to Discord Server Settings → Emoji → Upload Emoji
  4. Upload the resized GIF

Stickers (320×320px, under 512KB)

Discord stickers are larger than emoji:

  • 320×320 pixels (square format required)
  • Under 512KB file size
  • Must be PNG or GIF format (not APNG)

Slack GIF Sizes

Custom Emoji (128×128px, under 128KB)

Slack's emoji size limit is stricter than Discord:

  • 128×128 pixels recommended (any size works but gets scaled)
  • Under 128KB file size (very strict)

For a GIF at 128×128px to stay under 128KB, you typically need:

  • 15fps or lower
  • 2–3 seconds maximum duration
  • Reduced color palette (64–128 colors instead of 256)

How to compress aggressively for Slack:

  1. Resize to 128×128px
  2. Use GIF Compressor and set target size to under 128KB
  3. Upload to Slack: Workspace Settings → Customize → Emoji → Add Emoji

Twitter/X GIF Sizes

Twitter is the most permissive platform for GIFs:

  • Maximum 15MB file size
  • Maximum 1280×1080px resolution
  • GIFs over 15MB are automatically converted to MP4 by Twitter

For best performance, keep your Twitter GIF:

  • Under 5MB for fast loading
  • 720p or lower for mobile viewers
  • 4 seconds or shorter for highest engagement

Instagram GIF Sizes

Instagram doesn't support GIF format natively in feed posts. Here's what works:

Instagram Stories: Upload GIF as a video (convert to MP4 first)

  • 1080×1920px (9:16 vertical)
  • Under 30MB
  • Convert GIF to MP4 using GIF to MP4

Instagram DMs: GIFs can be shared via the GIF search (GIPHY integration) or as video files.

WhatsApp GIF Sizes

WhatsApp treats GIFs as videos internally:

  • Any resolution is accepted
  • Keep under 500KB for fast delivery on mobile data
  • Under 16MB is the hard limit

For WhatsApp, prioritize compression over resolution. A 480p GIF under 500KB loads instantly.

FAQ

Q: Why is my GIF blurry after resizing?
A: Upscaling (making a GIF larger than its original size) always causes blur because there's no new pixel data to fill in. Only downscale GIFs — don't resize them larger than their original dimensions.

Q: How do I resize a GIF without losing quality?
A: Quality loss is proportional to how much you resize. A 50% reduction (e.g., 800px to 400px) maintains good quality. Reducing to 25% of original size will show visible softness. Use high-quality source GIFs for the best results.

Q: Why does Discord say my GIF is too large even after resizing?
A: The pixel dimensions might be correct but the file size is still over the limit. After resizing, also run the GIF through the GIF Compressor to reduce file size.

Q: Can I resize a GIF on my phone?
A: Yes — the Moxion GIF Resizer works in mobile browsers. Open moxion.ai/gif-resizer on any iPhone or Android browser.

Q: What's the difference between resizing and compressing a GIF?
A: Resizing changes the pixel dimensions (width × height). Compressing reduces file size without changing dimensions, by reducing colors, framerate, or dithering. Both affect quality differently.
